NURI oh NURI....

Reference the RMAF Nuri helicopter which went missing with 6 crew members on board.

It is to be noted that the Nuri helicopter, the workhorse of the RMAF, entered service 39 years ago(1968).

It does not have an emergency locator transmitter which would allow rescuers to locate it.

How can one have a decent maintenance program and ready availability of spares for helicopters that are almost 40 years old?

Why should the govt be spending a few billion ringgit to buy a squadron of Sukhoi SU-30MKM fighter jets from Russia when they are not paying attention to the basics - like getting modern helicopters for the armed forces?

Surely, our fighting men and women in uniform deserve better?

In fact, it is distressing to note that, unlike other aircraft in the RMAF fleet, the ill-fated Nuri helicopter is not equipped with an emergency locator transmitter which is designed to send off a distress signal when an aircraft crashes. Instead, Nuri helicopters have to make do with the manual, hand-held search-and-rescue beacon. It is true that all that the survivors of the Nuri crash in Ba’kelalan, Sarawak, three years ago needed were a flare gun and a smoke grenade to attract the attention of a hovering helicopter.

Questions must also be raised over the fact that neither the cockpit voice recorder nor the flight data recorder are deemed essential equipment in the Nuri. Since their installation would have been a help to investigators in determining what happened, an opportunity to improve helicopter safety appears to have been lost.

Apa Menteri Pertahanan Najib kata tentang helikopter NURI. Jadi selamat kah anggota keselamatan kita?

Sapa makan cabai melaka dia pedaih laa
