Birdland( dedicated to Mat Salo)

This entry is dedicated to bro Matsalo and all jazz fans out there.

Birdland.

One of the best songs ever written in jazz history( bro Matsalo can vouch for that). Written by the late Joe Zawinul and recorded by Weather Report with Jaco Pastorious and his magnificent bass licks and stomps.I can never have enough of Birdland. But my first encounter with Birdland was not by Weather Report but by Maynard Ferguson(jazz trumpeteer) and later by the jazz quartet Manhattan Transfer. It was only later that I listen to the original Birdland by WR. It doesn't matter who performed Birdland. The song is just...mindblowing.

Salam Doc,

Oooh, birdland! Yup! And so is Manhattan Transfer!

One thing that amazes me about MT, is that they manage to influence the music scene in The Philippines, more than any other groups or individuals!

Thanks. And like you said, it doesn't matter by whom!

Shah cakapaje:

Yes MT is superb with their vocal harmony and vocal arrangement.
Am not suprised if MT had great influence in Filipina. Filipina is like Indonesia, they have so many talented ppl in performing.

Salam Mamat:

Rumah aku takdak home teater mamat.

Tazkirah tu...nak cari sedikit bekalan supaya ALLAH redha.

doc,

i'm no jazz fan. infact far from being one.

but i can figure you're such an avid cd-collector. one thing good being stuck when music itself has progressed, is we're not in any pressure to get their latest materials. i still keep up with a few 90s bands and with the finacial state i'm in, its a blessing that these fav bands only produce new stuff once a year, and sometimes even as long as 2-3 years. i can always download their stuff but getting their original cd gives the kick for my yearly fix...haha

salam doc,
memang betoi, bila baca entri ni, saya tersenyum lebar sorang-sorang. kalau main keyboard dulu, kena hafal these familiar phrases in a certain song. bukan apa, untuk main masa soundcheck. Pi korek bawah katil cari weather report, ada lagi dalam kotak Toyogo tu. and some other CD of that era.

as a musician dulu, kena dengaq macam-macam lagu. but my favourite sampai lani is Pat Metheny. I knew this malaccan chap masa di london, dia buat Phd dia kat Imperial. Kalau doc belajaq diUM dulu, mungkin doc kenai Dr. Kamaruzzaman. Dialah yang introduce to Pat Metheny. itu semua dulu, skarang kena dengaq Beyoncelah, Fall out boyslah, dan macam-macam.

Bro kerp:

I'm more for jazz fusion and big band stuff.

In school I do not anything about jazz or blues or R&B or folk.
In school I never heard of Dylan, Browne,Mitchell,Lightfoot,Pink Floyd,Queen,Clapton etc.

In school only heard songs by Deep Purple,Uriah Heep,Bee Gees, Sha NaNa,songs from saturday Night fever and Greasa. Those are songs frequently played on the radio.
My fav during those years was Black Dog Bone, Hail Amir( please..ppl, don't laugh lah...aku suka wajah kesayangan hamba da).

Things changed when I was in UM. Kampong guys from Johor and Kelantan were into rock. Names of bands the mentioned made me dizzy. I mean, chaps from KB knew about rock compared from a kid schooling in Aloq Star!!

But somehow, fusion jazz, country rock and blues appeal to me. Then Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, Toto and Steely Dan were introduced to me. The rest is history.

If I remeber correctly, most albums in the 70s to late 80s, most of the songs are good in a single album. From the 90s, an album will have maybe 2-3 likeable songs and the rest are somewhat fill-ins. That what I thought.

And at the moment, CDs are expensive. Its worse when there are very few nice songs in it, so buying a song on line or downloading it will be better.

Kerp, in months to come,I might put a few entries like this, just to let you sample what it was like for me, Mat Salo, Shah, Mior, Accia, Raden had when we were 'rumaja muda belia'. And che'gu , maybe can give us a taste of his music too....

And if you don't mind, share what you like with us.

But ,once the GE is announce, all this song/music entry will have to go to the back seat. heh3...

Accia:

Hah3..senyum sorang2 jugak no.

Yes Pat Methany is good, and is still performing and producing albums.

Sekarang, sekali-sekala pi dengar lagu-lagu dari region lain eg from Africa, middle east. They are good, tapi the albums are very expensive some costing between RM 80-120 per album!! mak datok!

So cari kat lime wire atau itunes saja la.

Adui! Post yang didedekasikan ke Mat Salo si tuan punya badan baru merentas lautan China Selatan dan baru siang tadi naik speedboat pi ateh kapal. Nasib internet connection OK boleh laa dok comment. Eh Dok, aku ni nanti orang ingat cari publisiti murahan.. hehee.

Birdland? Jangan jealous ya Pak Doc.. I was in holiday pi visit mmember kat London in '80 and I chanced upon tickets to WR "Night Passages" nyer tour at Hammersmith Odean. Sheer ecstasy, man. Peter Erskine on drums (yang 'discover' Dewa Bujana tuh!) Lani the late JP masa bass solo dia demand total attention, so somebody in audience buat bising sket depa pissed-off tendang kerusi and blah off stage macam itu saje. Semua kaget Pak! Pueh laa si late Joe Zawinul pi pujuk baru depa kuar balik sambung solo meleleh dia tu.. Depa mungkin pekene 'barang' jadi temperemental laa sket. But no doubt he was a genius!

And for E of Acca2! Pat Metheny rocks! In '84 depa tour Texas so turun laa my small town. Venue kecil maybe 1000 people max. I still naik bulu roma bila dengar 'Are you going with me?' And speaking of Beyonce, front page 'koran' disini semua tak abih citer Beyonce nyer concert tomorrow in Jakarta. Depa book 70 rooms for her entourage (including JayZ) with 60 tons of equipment. Orang di KL tak kempunan ke? Ha-ha.

Hehee.. memang citer2 ni membuat kita tersenyum kerang and syiok sendiri, ya Pak Doc?

Para-rap.. Para-rap.. paaah.. Para-rap-pap... :)

doc, good idea. maybe someone ought to start the ball rolling by doing some sort of a tag thing, write about 2 of their most favourite bands and and start pass it on to 2 of his blogger friends.

my kind of music isnt much ur cuppa btw. but hey, music is a part of universal language so if its an art, it sure will be appreciated by those with the right kind of ears.

Pak MatSalo:

Wah!Pak sudah nontom Weather Report bikin konsrt ya Pak? Saya ngak jelous pak. Bener! Cuma saya cemburu-in sama bapak. Lho! Pat Methany juga bapak sudah nonton.
Saya cuma sekadar Chick Corea aja pak. Itu pun kerna Chick Corea Electric Band sudi datang ke Universiti Malaya sempena terbitnya album pertama mereka. saya kagum sama Patitucci pak. Hebat dia. Tapi ngak ada karisma atau stage presence seperti Jaco Pastorious pak.

Makasih pak kerna sudi ngonsi cerita konsert yg bapak hadiri dulu.

Tagging game for favourite band/songs...not a bad idea.
Maybe you can start the tagging game.
What say you!

Kerp (Ph.D) said...

me to start a tag? i'm gonna say a definite no-no. seriously doc, its not a bad idea at all, especially you to be the one to start the ball rollin'. now, back to you, sir! hehe...
