We have seen it so many times.Yet, we can't help it.I mean we don't have any choice but to keep on laughing. And laughing out loud we did.

Lets laugh again at these gems.

Why can't they make us laugh like this nowadays?
Another gem is the part with M Zain as an Indian husband. The quarrel scene with his wife is a classic.

I don't know if anyone agrees with me but if we were to study carefully P. Ramlee's comedies its actually his sidekicks who are funnier. In the Bujang Lapok trilogy, it's Aziz and Sudin, in Labu Labi its the classical M Zain and in Do Re Mi its Tompel. I am not saying that P Ramlee is not good, what I am saying is that he brings the best out of his people. I mean if Aziz, Sudin, M Zain or Tompel were to act on their own they just aren't as funny. Well at least that's how I see it.

It's still funny after all these years. LOL. P.Ramlee guy understood the many layers of humor that work in different situation, and he knew who could best deliver those lines. He's a guy with a big talent. Apek understands the same thing, but I'm not sure about the Scenario gang though. Or Mr Os.

Che'gu:

I agree with you about his side-kicks. For me, Ajiz,Sudin ,M.Zain and Ahmad Nisfu are the ppl who made P Ramlee's comedy a classic.
I mean take Ajiz for example: in Ali Baba Bujang Lapok, the scene when he wanted to chose the way he's gonna walk( with the helmet on his head,at home)was a blast. And as in the clip I put here, the lobang hidung pujaan hatiku is another example. So is Sudin.
M.Zain as the angry Indaian husband who scolded his wife for not 'basuhing berak anak' and his roles in the 2 Labu-Labi films was good. Basically tese are the few actors who complimented P Ramlee. And if we remember the interviews with Ajiz and Sudin several years back, most of the script vocalised were impromptu like the screen-test scenes and the Semaringseng Mata Kaji stuff in Ali baba BL.

And we see after P Ramlee came back to KL, the films like Do Re Mi were not as good as the BL series and LL series.

Same thing with his sidekicks, they didn't shine as expected.
I think its the chemistry btwn P Ramlee and these few actors that made it.

I am sure given another 20-30 years, the Bujang Lapok, Labu-Labi with Madu Tiga will still bring laughters to us and our children and grandchildren.

Somehow that era of the 50's really brought out the best in P Ramlee, not only in comedies but also drama. How can we forget Antara Dua Darh=jat,Penarik Beca and Ibu Mertua ku?

The present batch of comedy actors, Apek had become too stereotyped. I heard that whether Apek is acting or not, its just the same. Some say its Apek in and out of films.
As for Scenario....I do laugh when a accidentally saw them on TV.Not for their jokes but for them allowing themselves to be stupid.

I don't know la... memang tiada tandingan. My daughters simply love P. Ramlee movies. Tengok ler berpuluh kalipun, gelak tawa macam tu jugak.
Anyway, just finished reading Nasir P. Ramlee's Bapaku P. Ramlee. Interesting and in a way quite heartwrenching too, especially towards the end of his life.

Tok,
But my favorite is stil Masam-Masam Manis... the one yang ada Sharifah Hanim as Cikgu Norkiah tu.

Pak mior:

Ah ah...Masam-masam Manis, baru saja showed kat RTM on Monday. "Adik nak baju koboi enam, pistol 2....adoi...bangkrap la aku mak oii..."

alamak, wanted to point out on m zain's character as an indian hubby but cikgu mentioned it first.

m zain's part of the golden era as everyone would agree. i truly believe his labu character outdid p ramlee's labi. he was the livewire in that 2 movie sequels.

but then, hey, all who had worked with p ramlee deserves recognition for a fine acting in their respective roles, namely, kemat hassan, omar suita, m shariff, ali fiji, ibrahim pendek, sm busra and and the list goes on. God i love these people.

tokasid said...

Kerp:

Yes, bila kita tengok most of his supporting cast are good. They have the chemistry.

Unfortunately zaman skrg you don't see that. Cuma aku nampak Afdlin,Hans dan Awie nampak can click together in light comedies.

Yang lain tu hampeh.

Kerp (Ph.D) said...

surprisingly, awie can act in light comedies but during his sembilu days, he was disastrous.

We have three generations in the family that loves the Bujang Lapok movies: my mom's, mine, my nieces and nephews, and my grandnieces and grandnephews.
Its funny really how these movies can still solicit our riotous laughter after all these years.
Their one-liners are classic.

P/S I will be in Cairo by Sunday morning and will be able to advise you on what you needed to know accordingly.

Ha.. tu laa Pak Doc, seniman import dari Utagha Acheh.. hehee.

Pernah pi museum dia tak Pak Doc? Ada 'love letter' yang depa tulih at the height of romance ngan Saloma. In English plak tu. Depa nyer omputih priceless! And he also self-taught himself to read music. So ada original taugeh (like E of accia kata) hang boleh tengok. Part ni yang I'm so impressed. He was such a good writer. True genius lah, semua boleh. Sayang betul that he wasn't well-rewarded during his lifetime... Alfatihah to Teuku Nyak Puteh.

Salaam, Pak Doc.

Kerp:

Yes, suprisingly Awie can do light comedies. But those sembilu and the sezaman dgnnya is just pure exploitation of his star status.
His actng in those melodrama is basically HAMPEH.

tokasid said...

Fauziah;

I'm not suprised if P Ramlee fan base becomes 5 generations! Yes those one liners are classic in their own right.
Remember when Sudin and Ajiz became pencuri in Nujum Pak Blalang? When they were splitting their harvest?

TQ about the Cairo thing. InsyaALLAH my flight will be on 4th Dec.

Pak Matsalo:

Generally most of our stars of yesteryears are from Isle of Sumatra.
Take Ajiz Sattar,Rosnani Jamil and few others. Some came by the bangsawan troupe way, some became crews and extras before getting juicy roles.

I've never been to P Ramlee's museum, but am not suprised with his good command of English. But a love letter in English! Thats something bro. That is deeply in love(and true enough till his death and for her till her death).

P Ramlee is not the only star who was neglected after 'sliding down', so is R Azmi and Nordin Ahmad.

A few became successful in their ventures(in films and other things) like Jins Shamsuddin, Ajiz Sattar, Mustapha Maarof , Saadoah, Ahmad Daud,Aziz Jaafarwith Normadiah and also Ahmad Mahmud.

My doa to all who hqad left us.

PS- Today, 26 December 2007, another star passed away ie Hussain Abu Hassan.AlFatihah)

Alfatihah untuk Allahyarham Hussein Abu Hassan, semoga rohnya ditempatkan di kalangan mereka yang soleh. Takziah to the family.

p/c Doc, Cairo is cold as winter has set in. By the time you get here, it could be colder than now. Bring sweaters or jackets, a light one for the day, a heavy one for night.
If you travelling via Dubai, be prepared for unexpected longer-than-expected delays and misplaced luggage. Bring an overnighter with you as hand luggage to be on the safe side.
Enjoy your trip. I like Cairo despite the dust and traffic jams. And the drivers? Oh, every Arab here thinks they're Schumacher. Jangan duduk depan or else you asyik nak menekan (imaginary) brek je. And they honked and swear at other drivers at will.
Tidak berkesempatan nak mem-blog about this. Will do it after today when all the assignments are done with.

Hi Doc,

Haha...P Ramlee was a real cool joker...He made the simplest things funny...Maybe because he took such a lighthearted approach to almost every little thing!

I particularly loved 'Batu Belah Batu Bertangkup' and 'Madu Tiga'...Hehe...

Salam Doc,
Bercakap tentang baju koboi dalam Masam2 Manis, kekadang kat kedai mamak bila ditanya "mau makan apa?", saya akan jawap "Baju koboi 2 pasang, pistol nak 8, kuda nak 4"
Mamak tu sure garu kepala.

Kekadang tu bila ditanya soalan ntah apa2, saya akan bagi jawapan tu jugak.

Basically, his lines are priceless. For example:
"Ekzos buluh"
"Kutu Babi"
"Ala KAssim"
"Ahli muzik?"
"Mau mati pun pegang bendera"
"Gin & tonic"
"Tarzan pun makan belacan"
"Kajang Pak Malau..."
Dan tak lupa juga, bila P.Ramlee meng'azan dalam Semerah Padi. Tersangat merdu. Banyak nak tulis, sampai esok pun tak abis.

ah:

TQ for the info. Last night we went to a travel for all to buy jackets for Hafiz.
I will need gloves for my arthritic fingers.

tokasid said...

Daphne:

Yes..Madu 3 is so hillarious esp when the changing of the plastered(POP) arms kept changing from one side to the other.

tokasid said...

Mute:

Whoa!! you really tak kasi chan to that mamak eh?

Yes, those films' one liners are gems on their own right.

In Ali Bab Bujang Lapok I like best the scene when Ajiz ,shirtless and a helmet on his head, tried several gaits of walk. Now, that is so funny.
