Cats in the Cradle and Mountain Dance.

Salam to all.

Another folk singer-songwriter that I like is Harry Chapin, esp. his Cats in the Cradle which was also covered by other superstars.

And another genre which I fell in love was Jazz(fusion) introduced by my city friends Zain Azlan and Raja Amin( heart surgeon in Pantai Puteri JB) and those reviewed by Abdul Hamed Samad( yes, the brother of Kak Ena and Tok Mommy).

Hope you will enjoy these songs.

Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin.

Mountain Dance by Dave Gruisin'(with GRP All Star Band)

Kandungan posting mungkin ada kena mengena atau tidak dengan makhluk yang hidup atau yang telah tiada.Kalau sapa-sapa terasa nak buat macamana kan. Sapa makan cabai melaka dia pedaih laa

Salam Doc,

Thanks for songs, both are in my books; one for the lyrics, the other for sheer musical simplicity.

ps. The way things are going, I will have to get me a piano soon. Bunyi cam orangutan main pun takpa lah! lol!

Salam Doc,
Saya ni buta muzik. Mungkin saya kerja di kapal hingga tidak berapa mengikuti perkembangan muzik pada masa tu.

somehow cats in the cradle hit us right in the face.
Some of us never spent quality time with our loved ones(esp our children)and by the time we realised, its too late.

As for Gruisin..he is very good, but entah macamana I like his album The Mountain Dance most. The ones after that dah macam tak sedap dengar.

Pak zabs:

Its okay to be buta music, as long as boleh dengar and enjoy sikit pun kira okay.

Mungkin sebab sering terperap dalam kapai dulu la tu..

doc,

Ugly Kid Joe, a rock band from the late 80s did a cover of 'cats in the cradle' back then obviously with a touch of rock but much of the melody and the way chapin sang was intact. admittedly, i would never hv heard of harry chapin if UKJ didnt record this particular song.

You are right. If I am not mistaken, UKJ's rendition was included in the latest compilation of (?)The best of rock songs ( ada lukisan eagle landing down as the CD cover)

There are few other songs by Cat Stevens( Yusuf Islam) which was covered by several rock groups of your era like Father and Son, Wide world ( maybe it was covered by Red Hot Chilli Pepper) and was well received by young rockers.

So , you see it doesn't matter who the singers are, if the songs are good and if the artiste who re-recorded it is good, you'll find the song will become evergreen.
I am sure in 20 years time another artiste will have another version of Cats in the cradle too.

Waah bro'? What's happening? Nampak gaya semua asyik reminiscing down the musical lane? Hehee..

Bro'.. yang Lewis fill-in for Harvey Mason in JKT last year gue x der ler. I only read about it. Nathan East and and one Korean guitarist (Jack Lee) complemented the band. Apparently next time Bob James tour the East dia suka pakai 'local' guitarist and drummer. Lee Ritenour sibuk kot?

Ha kalau Harry Chapin cowok. Mary Chapin cewek pernah dengar tak Pak Doc? Also one of my fave female songwriters...

Doc.. u ever been through fasa Mezzoforte and Crusaders tak?

Tambah lagi Pak Doc. Wide World was covered by Mr.Big.

But Cat Stevens lagi power kan Pak Doc?. First Cut is the Deepest was a hit in every decade for forty years...
1967 - dia sendiri
1970s - Rod Stewart
1980s - Linda Rondstadt
1990s - X ingat dah
2000s - Sheryl Crow

hah3...Bukan apa aku dah siap banyak draft about the genre and groups that I liked. lagi pun nanti bila election time semua jadi panas...so sekarang kita bagi relax dulu.

Cats in the cradle ramai org ingath Harry Chapin yg tulis, but actually it was written by his wife,Sandy Chapin. And that song was not about Harry, it was about Sandy's first hubby with his father. This song was covered by Cat Stevens and Jim Croche too apart from Ugly Kid Joe.

Is Mary Chapin related with harry? Tak kan?

Yes, now that you mentioned it, Wide world was covered by Mr Big, and they did it well.
Well, many of Cat's songs were recorded ,that some ppl do not know he wrote it( just like many tak tau the song Black Magic Women made famous by santana, was written and recorded by the early Fleetwood Mac in 1967-68 era, written and sung by Peter Green)Santana improvised the guitar licks and made in more Latinised Rock and he made millions with that song!

Crusaders and Mezzoforte..yeah...that was our time right. Apart from Joe sample , Stixx Hooper and Wilton Felder, aku tak ingat sapa lagi dalam Crusaders.
Kalau tak silap Larry carlton pernah join gak kot.

Mezzoforte ni depa from ?Iceland kan. Fusion-jazz-funk. They played very clinically sharp. They are much better than Special FX.

And what about Shakatak the Brit Jazz-funk band with their Night Birds.

wahhh...'first cut is the deepest' was originally by mr yusof islam himself? thats new to me man. thanks pak MS.

for some reason, UKJ's rendition was not just like any other cover tunes then and now. their version was huge that some even thought it was their own composition.
